In the world of PC repair, changing a computer's BIOS battery is one of the most common and easiest procedures to do. Dell computers follow this pattern, and can often be done without any special skills or tools. Simply open up the computer and locate the BIOS battery on its motherboard — it is usually a coin-sized silver or black button cell. The BIOS battery holds the computer's hardware settings when the PC is powered off, so when you change it your computer may lose your system configuration. This means that you should back up any important data before changing the battery to avoid losing anything important. If you are installing a new battery into a Dell computer, use a coin to gently press down on the old one until it releases. Then, simply take out the old one and put in the new one. You can also buy special BIOS battery change devices if you are replacing more than 1 or 2 batteries at once. These kits usually come with instructions for many common Dell model computers. Many Dell computers, such as the Dell Inspiron, have the BIOS battery hidden under a few components. This is how you get to it: 1) Shut down your computer and unplug it from the power outlet. 2) Remove any attached peripherals or cables that may be connected to your computer. 3) Remove the stand and take out all screws in the base of the computer. There should be two to three different screws — one for each side panel and another for the stand. 4) Slide off each side panel and unplug any attached wires from the ports in front of the computer (such as mouse or keyboard connectors). 5) The side panels will now come out of the computer. 6) Notice a screw holding the battery in place. Remove it and slide it up to remove it from its holder. 7) Put the new BIOS battery in your new slot, re-connect the wires, and put back all parts of your computer on its place. For some models, there are additional screws for this part of the process. For example, on Dell Inspiron models with a memory stick slot, there are two screws that hold down the memory stick cover while you take off the main cover for changing your BIOS battery. After these screws are removed, you can pull out both sides of this cover while putting in the new one. If your computer is not a Dell, the process may differ. Check your computer's documentation or user guide to see how to access its BIOS battery without damaging the computer. Once you've changed the BIOS battery, simply restart your computer and it will reset itself with the new battery installed. If you have any questions about the process, feel free to call Dell customer service at 1-800-624-9896 or look up your specific model on their website at www.dell.com.
